Guidelines for Families

The Healthy Beginnings 2-5 Guidelines for Practitioners are based on best-practice and a combination provincial and territorial policies.  However, Practitioner Guidelines are only for a portion of the day.

On this page, you will find recommendations for the entire day of a preschooler. Canada’s Food Guide, The Childhood Obesity Foundation and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) all make recommendations regarding preschoolers physical activity levels, screen time, sugar sweetened beverages and eating practices.  In this download, you will find CSEP Guidelines for a full day of physical activity and sedentary activities, The Childhood Obesity Foundation’s 5, 2, 1, 0 Approach (modified for preschoolers) and Canada Food Guide recommendations for a whole day of eating.  This PDF is a section from both the Healthy Eating & Sugar Sweetened Beverages and Physical Activity & Screen Time manuals.
